Thousands of hungry and homeless people will be find hot Thanksgiving meals at Turner Field on Nov. 27.
The nonprofit Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless will serve more than 500 turkeys and ham donated by Publix and Kroger supermarkets.
DeKalb Sheriff Thomas Brown, who makes the jail's kitchen available for cooking the annual Thanksgiving dinner, also donated $5,000 to Elisabeth Omilani, the group's director and daughter of Hosea Williams, who founded HFTH.
Brown said the money came from leftover campaign funds. He said the cash will help the organization with its mortgage-assistance, utility-assistance and other programs.
"These are some very difficult times," Brown said. "This a time where I believe God is really testing us to see if in spite of our hard times, we are going to reach out and help someone who is not as fortunate as us."
