DIVA Conference empowers women

Women can find out how to strengthen their bodies, minds and spirits at the Oct. 17-19 women's empowerment conference in Scottdale.

The annual Be a Divine Inspirational, Victorious, Anointed - or DIVA - Conference will be at Worshippers Interceding for Excellence Ministry on North Decatur Road.

Alicia Cardwell-Brown, the church elder who is helping organize the free conference, said it is about making women strong.

"It's about empowering women through the power of God," she said. "We will give them information about keeping their temple healthy, strengthening their minds so that they avoid abuse and speakers to strengthening their spirits."

Conference speakers include evangelist Betty Hollister, the First Lady of Greater King David Missionary Baptist Church, Chicago, Pastor Kathern Thomas, founder and pastor of Worshippers Interceding for Excellence Ministry; Evangelist Monique Bates, a case manager at Safe Haven Transitional Inc. and nutritionist Dr. Joy Scott.

Cardwell-Brown said Scott will focus on nutrition and health, Bates will speak on mental health to avoid abuse, and Hollister and Thomas will lead the charge on spiritual strength.

The DIVA Conference is in its fourth year. It starts Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday sessions take place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday programming will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A complimentary lunch will be served on Saturday.

The Worshippers Interceding for Excellence Ministry is at 3096 North Decatur Road.
