Tween and teen girls and their parents can explore a range of subjects about growing up at Puberty Rocks on Aug. 1 at DeKalb Medical.

The 7 p.m. workshop, which is hosted by obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Kay Entrekins, will help open the lines of communication between mothers and their young daughters, ages 9 to 13 years old.

Entrekins will discuss the physical and emotional effects of puberty, body changes, peer pressure, stress and sexual development. She will also discuss the controversial Gardasil human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to prevent cervical cancer, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in June 2006.

She will also assist moms and caregivers in the art of handling the turbulent “tween” and teen years.

The seminar will be in the Women’s Center Auditorium on DeKalb Medical’s Central Campus, 2701 North Decatur Road in Decatur. The event is free but registration is required.
