When men take the floor for basketball tryouts with the Georgia Gwizzlies on Oct. 25, women hoopsters will be able to hit the hardwood too.
Last week the Gwizzlies, an American Basketball Association team based in Macon, said that both men and women would be invited to their open tryouts at Memorial Park Basketball Gym in Macon
Previously, only men were allowed to try out for the semi-pro squad.
Gwizzlies general manager Embry Malone, a DeKalb resident, said in a release the move was sparked by the success of the WNBA and his belief that a woman will someday suit up in an NBA uniform.
He said he recently watched WNBA star Becky Hammon of the San Antonia Siver Stars play a game against the Washington Mystics.
"She can play," Malone said. "We'd like her to try out in October, as an example."
The Gwizzlies originally scheduled their tryout camp for June 21, but it was rescheduled.
Tryout camp registration is $150.The team will open training camp on Nov. 25.
