The days seem to go by so fast and many parents are filling up their already hectic schedules to include the social activities of their kids, mainly birthday parties. So if you're planning one soon or headed out to one this weekend here are some things you should consider.

A typical rule of thumb is one guest for each year the child is celebrating. Of course a one-year-old is the exception. But most party planners and parents agree that it is generally unwise to invite a large number of kids to a toddler party. For tweens and teens consider having the party at the local skating rink or bowling alley.

One great benefit to hosting the party off-site is no clean-up at home for Mom. There are some cool venues here in South DeKalb. Golden Glide Skating Rink at 2745 Wesley Chapel Road in Decatur or the Little Gym on Turner Hill Road in Lithonia, both have experienced staff ready to help you plan a fabulous shindig for your child.

When calling ahead for prices, don't forget to ask for the price per child. Some places will have a minimum charge as well. Also, find out what is included with the price. For example, are party favors, cake, snacks and drinks included?

You'll also want to know if bringing your own food or drink is an option. In many cases it is cheaper to bring a cake, even if it is purchased from a local bakery.

It is best to have a children's party that is not too long. That way you don't have to worry about cranky, over-excited kids.

It's a good idea to limit a child's party to an hour-and-a-half to two hours. Be sure to include the beginning and ending time on the invitation.

You should send out invitations two weeks in advance and follow up with a phone calls three days before the party. For activities, consider crafts and art projects that match the theme and be sure to have smocks and extra art supplies handy.

Planning a kid's party doesn't have to be elaborate, just remember to keep it simple and plan for more than you need.

If you are headed out to a party this weekend don't forget to get clear directions or consult a website like Map Quest for directions. The hosts will be doing a lot of running around the day of the party and may not be able to answer the phone right away. There can be nothing more irritating than getting lost. If you are unsure about what the child would like, ask if the child is registered for gifts at a website or toy store.
