DeKalb County mayors will take to the streets on bicycles on March 3 for the fourth annual “Georgia Rides to the Capitol.”

Lithonia’s Tonya Peterson, Avondale’s Ed Reicker and Decatur’s Bill Floyd will join mayors from across the state who will ride to support development of a regional bicycle network around major transit facilities, activity centers and schools. They will join more than 1,000 metro Atlanta bike riders for the event.

Riders will depart from designated spots in Decatur and Roswell and meet at the state Capitol for an 11:45 a.m. press conference. Cyclists will depart from the East Lake MARTA Station north parking lot, 2260 College Ave. in Atlanta, at 10:45 a.m. for the 5-mile ride.

Lisa Safstrom, coodinator for State Scenic Byways at the Georgia Department of Transportation, said that although 11 percent of Georgia’s traffic deaths involve bicycles or pedestrians, only 1.4 percent of federal safety set-aside funding goes towards bike/pedestrian projects.
