An after-school program that targets the challenges facing young males is accepting registration at four metro Atlanta schools.
The Boys Assurance for Education program currently operates at Redan Elementary School, MLK Jr. High School and Millers Preparatory Academy for Boys in Lithonia and Forrest Hill Academy in Atlanta.
It is offered by Mothers Raising Sons Inc., a nonprofit organization focused on improving the plight of young males.
BAFE participants receive assistance with homework and tutoring and engage in activities to improve their academic achievement, character development, decision-making skills, social skills, and entrepreneurial skills.
Several academic field trips including college tours also are planned for this school year.
Lisa Norwood, founder and executive director of Mothers Raising Sons, said she started the nonprofit because of the challenges she faced raising her own three sons.
Mothers Raising Sons also offers parenting classes, separate support group meetings for mothers and sons, and an All Boys 2 Men Summer Camp. Its motto is “A mother cannot be a father nor a positive male role to her son(s), but she tries to play the role!”
MRS is hiring part-time tutors and math and English teachers for the after-school program. It also is seeking male volunteers willing to give back to “the village of single mothers raising sons” by providing suggestions regarding issues and concerns of mothers and sons.
