Montell Jordan to preach at Sunrise Service

Montell Jordan will preach at the 75th Easter Sunrise Service atop Stone Mountain on April 21.

Grammy-nominated R&B recording artist and actor Montell Jordan – now worship leader at Victory World Church in Norcross – will preach at the 75th annual Easter Sunrise Service atop Stone Mountain on April 21.

Known for his 90s hit song "This Is How We Do It,” Jordan was the primary male solo artist on Def Jam's Def Soul imprint until he left the label in 2003 – walking away from the fame to become a minister of the gospel in 2010.

Thousands to flock to sunrise service

The Sunrise Service at the top of Stone Mountain began in 1944 when youth from Stone Mountain First United Methodist climbed up to watch the sun rise.

The nondenominational service, which draws thousands of worshippers from across metro Atlanta, is organized by the  Stone Mountain Sunrise Association. It began in 1944  when Lucille A. Lanford, a Stone Mountain First United Methodist member, suggested that the church’s youth group climb to the top of the mountain on Easter morning to watch the sunrise.

Today, worshippers hike or ride the cable car to the mountain’s top to watch the sunrise and hear a message of faith and hope.

Organizers expect more than 5,000 people to attend the service, which begins at 7 a.m.

Park gates open at 4 a.m. and the Summit Skyride  will begin operations at 4:30 a.m.

Vehicle entry to the park is $20 for a one-day permit or $40 for an annual permit.  Church vans and buses will enter the park free for the service.

Skyride fees are $15 for round-trip or $12 one-way. Information about all-attractions passes are available at the gate.

To accommodate the large crowd, a simultaneous worship service will take place at the base of the mountain on the Memorial Lawn. The Rev. Robert Mason from For Eternity Christian Church in Stone Mountain will lead that service.

A third Easter worship service will also take place at 9 a.m. at Stone Mountain Campground. Dr. Dan Parker, pastor emeritus of First Baptist Church of Stone Mountain, will preach at the campground Easter service.

Stone Mountain Park is off U.S. Highway 78 East, Exit 8, in Stone Mountain.
