Neglected and abused children often don’t have proper shoes and in commemoration of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, being observed this month, DeKalb District Attorney Sherry Boston is cohosting a shoe drive to benefit DFACS.
The drive – titled ‘A Mile in their Shoes’ – is co-sponsored by DeKalb County Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs. It is collecting new and lightly-worn shoes for boys, girls and teens through April 30 at eight recrestion centers across the county.
Boston says the donated shoes will go to the DeKalb County Division of Family and Children Services (DFACS) to benefit the children it serves.
The drive is also helping to build awareness about the existence of child abuse in the community and focus attention on prevention.
Boston’s office says the inaugural children’s shoe drive figuratively and literally acknowledges the plight of children suffering from abuse.
“We want to raise awareness about this critical issue while filling a practical need that provides a measure of comfort and care,” Boston said.
